Rucksack Atlas IV 2
Whether it's Berghaus Atlas, Crusader or Vulkan. All of these 3 models are decades-old models, which are offered almost unchanged in exactly the same way. These outdated designs from the early 80s do not have an adjustable back system. It is therefore more of a coincidence if one of the 4 sizes (back length 1 to 4) fits perfectly. In addition, it is usually necessary to adjust a backpack even shorter or longer, depending on the load. None of this is even possible here.
I've been using the atlas as an alternative to the Bundeswehr combat backpack for 3.5 years now. That may also be the reason why many - who are not used to anything good and not used to anything else - are so enthusiastic about the mountain house. Of course, it is better than the combat backpack, but it is also just too small a daypack and was never even remotely suitable for the tasks intended for it.
I have been doing trekking tours in arctic regions, mountaineering, etc. I know what I'm talking about and I know dozens of backpacks and am very interested in equipment anyway.
The Berghaus is by far the worst large backpack you can buy! Since it now also costs around 300 euros, the price is no longer a selling point.
This 110-liter backpack, which is smaller than all competing models for the specified size of 110 L, is intended for loads of over 30 kg. It's a bad joke! The backpack is absolutely unsuitable for heavy loads! The carrying system is not nearly stiff enough, the waist belt is too short, too narrow and much too soft, just like the straps, which are absolutely unsuitable for such loads! The same applies to the soft, barely available back cushion, which is poorly and inappropriately (cheap) and thus immediately causes the back to be soaking wet.
In my copy, the shoulder straps are also of different lengths (the Cordura band is also shorter on the right, see photos) and sewn crooked. That's annoying.
The load control straps (the straps above the shoulder straps) do not perform their function. Even though the backpack only weighs a ridiculous 15 kg and I want to pull the load properly on my back, the band runs through the buckle again almost without resistance and the backpack slags too far away from the shoulders, to the left and right.
The PU coating is absolute crap! After 3.5 years, it is completely broken, and I always treated the backpack extremely carefully, even washed it regularly in the shower with warm water to remove perspiration and always stored it in a dark place away from the sun. The PU coating on my 20-year-old Lowe Alpine Cerre Torre 75+ is even better and the condition of the PU coating on my approx. 7-year-old Tatonka Bison X1 75+ (now Tatonka Yukon X1) is still as good as new.
But even when new, the atlas was useless, even if it only rained briefly. The water went straight into the deck compartment.
Now, after 3.5 years, the entire backpack is immediately absorbed with water and the fabric is completely wet. During a corresponding rain shower, a drop of water has never penetrated my Tatonka Bison's backpack. The same goes for my other, various backpacks!
The mountain house requires a backpack rain cover even in drizzle.
The bottom compartment is separated from the main compartment with a Velcro fastener instead of with a zipper. Probably to save money. To the left and right of the Velcro fastener, the (unusually thin) fabric has been torn for a long time, although I always try to fill the bottom compartment halfway and then fill the main compartment with only a small amount of weight so that no great pressure is exerted on the weak seams.
The waist belt buckle is also faulty, which suddenly bursts open again and again when there is greater tension (not only for me). In addition - due to the design - the right part of the buckle quickly falls off the Cordura band all by itself and is lost (also not just for me).
The backpack is produced in China. I don't want to buy anything from hostile police stations!! Other manufacturers also manage to set up their own plants, e.g. in Vietnam, and produce there under completely different conditions (see Tatonka, for example).
If you are really looking for a large, durable backpack and for whatever reason, want a military model and in the color olive, you should take a look at the Tatonka Yukon (X1), the Tasmania Tiger, Savotta or Karrimor Predator 60-100 L or 80 - 130 L models. Of course, there are more alternatives.
The atlas is not worth the money and is completely unsuitable for larger loads. Quality and robustness are classified as third-rate, the carrying comfort is poor underground, as long as you not only know the Bw combat backpack, but are used to reasonable alternatives.
