Prepared with Canteens for Emergencies

The canteens from our range allow for continuous supply of drinking water.

What should be considered when using canteens?

There are generally no special considerations when using canteens. To use them, the canteens must be unscrewed: After drinking, care must be taken to tightly close the cap. Otherwise, valuable drinking water could unknowingly leak out of the bottle. Of course, a soaked outfit is also not optimal.

Canteens are only intended for filling with water. While other liquids can also be filled, attention must be paid to the consistency of the liquid. Milk should not be filled into canteens because it can quickly oxidize with the metal and go bad. Canteens should be rinsed out regularly. This ensures that the canteen remains hygienic and can be used permanently.

Which canteen is suitable for me?

When choosing a canteen, consider its intended application area first. Depending on the area of use, the canteen can be chosen in a larger or smaller variant. Opening and closing is done via a screw cap.

Some bottles have an additional drinking cup that is placed over the screw cap and can also serve as a hygienic lid or protect against contamination. This cup is often secured with a rubber or plastic band. When selecting the appropriate canteen, special attention can be paid to its design. Most canteens are in black and olive green tones. However, there are also versions with camouflage elements, which can be used optimally in forest and meadow areas. The simple design of the canteens ensures that they blend in perfectly with the surroundings. Popular models include those from the manufacturer Nalgene.

Expert Tip:

Turning one into two

An aluminum canteen with a cup lid has the following advantage: The lid can be used for cooking food and boiling water. This saves weight and storage volume in the backpack.

Questions: Canteens

Why are most canteens made of aluminum?

Aluminum canteens are not heavier than plastic bottles, but they can be used to heat water and serve as a multi-tool. The aluminum bottle can be used as a hammer, cooking pot, throwing weight for a rope, and various other purposes. There are no limits to creativity here. In addition, aluminum canteens are protected from potential plasticizers that may be present in PET bottles.

How do you clean canteens?

This method is suitable for both plastic and metal bottles. Ingredients: You need a bottle cleaner (handle brush), baking soda, and kitchen paper (newspaper is also possible). Instructions: Put one to two packets of baking soda and a little water into the bottle. Then clean the inside carefully with the brush. Rinse thoroughly with boiling water afterwards. Then the paper is inserted into the bottle, because the paper absorbs any remaining odors.

Is drinking stale water unhealthy?

Water is slowly contaminated, bacteria multiply only after 1-2 days. It depends on whether the water has been cold standing after filling, and whether the bottle has not been opened. However, if you have even drunk directly from it, dangerous germs can accumulate faster. Some people get sick from this, others do not. Already after a day, air bubbles form and the water gets a slightly different taste. After 5 days it should be better to dispose of it. Of course, there are also water filters and water disinfection agents to buy if throwing away is not an option. Tip: Fill water in plastic bottles and place them in the sun. The plastic allows UV rays through, which kill the germs.

Are there alternatives?

Alternatives to canteens are hydration systems, which can be purchased individually and then stored in the backpack. Other options include water packs or hydration packs, which are already equipped with built-in hydration systems.
