High-quality sleeping bags for warm outdoor nights

Sleeping bags ensure warm nights and a peaceful, warm sleep. We show you what to consider.

What should be considered when using?

Sleeping bags can be opened and closed with a zipper. Before getting into the sleeping bag, the zipper should be opened. Once the body is inside the sleeping bag, the zipper can be closed again. This optimizes the use of space. A small pack size is therefore extremely important.

Our range of sleeping bags consists of warming materials designed to be weather-resistant. Therefore, most variants can also be used outdoors. To transport the sleeping bag quickly and efficiently, it must be rolled up and then stuffed into a compression stuff sack. The sleeping bag protects against cold at night and ensures a cozy and warm sleep. The high-quality quality of our sleeping bags guarantees durability.

Which sleeping bag is the right one?

When selecting and purchasing sleeping bags from the range offered here, you can't go wrong. All our sleeping bags are in olive green or other greenish shades. Therefore, the sleeping bags can be used effortlessly in tactical maneuvers and can be used in both summer and winter. They blend inconspicuously into the environment, are lightweight, and do not emit betraying color signals.

The size of the sleeping bags can vary. Different brands specializing in sleeping bags, such as the Carinthia brand, offer various types and sizes that should be adapted to personal circumstances. A length of 200 centimeters should be sufficient even for the tallest user. It is important that the sleeping bag should never be too small. Otherwise, it could become tight: this not only leads to insufficient heat generation or retention but also to confinement, which promotes an uncomfortable sleep. Large sleeping bags guarantee maximum mobility, ensuring a good feeling.

Also, consider the weight of the sleeping bag, and an ultra-light sleeping bag does not unnecessarily complicate transport.

Expert Tip:

Sleeping bags: Washing/Cleaning the right way

Normally, it is not mandatory, but occasionally, a sleeping bag is simply ready for a wash. Since this should be manual washing, you are mostly reliant on washing in the bathtub. Normally, the filling material should not play a role here, but of course, manufacturer instructions must be observed and given priority over other tips.

It is advisable to fill relatively little water in the bathtub and mix it with detergent. If there is a liner in the sleeping bag, it should be removed beforehand. Then the sleeping bag is placed in the tub and kneaded through. After thorough cleaning, the water can be drained, and the sleeping bag can be wrung out. Of course, several rinses with clear water should be repeated in the same pattern.

For drying, it is recommended to set up a sturdy clothes horse in the bathtub and preferably hang the sleeping bag over it with two people. A lot of water will drip off, so it is best to choose a place like the bathtub for dripping and drying.

Afterward, consider waterproofing. There are special sprays and products for this purpose. If waterproofing is necessary, this will usually be noted in the manufacturer's care instructions.

Questions: Sleeping bags

What sleeping bag shapes are there?

Rectangular sleeping bags: The classic sleeping bag shape, good for mild temperatures.

Egg-shaped or tapered sleeping bags

These are a good compromise between rectangular and mummy-shaped sleeping bags. They are designed to be more movement-friendly than rectangular sleeping bags.

Mummy-shaped sleeping bags

Can also be used in cooler temperatures and are ideal for winter due to their optimal fit to the body's warmth zones.

How to find the right size/fit?

Here, the only thing to consider is that any space created in the sleeping bag, for example by extra length, cannot be efficiently warmed by the body. However, it is more important to find the right shape for oneself, for example, a mummy-shaped sleeping bag. This means that the shape of the sleeping bag is not straight but adapted to the body shape. Since outdoor areas always need to be warmed, such a shape is advantageous as it minimizes these areas as well as possible.

What features should you look for?

Hood or thermal collar can help prevent body cooling in the head area. Zippers often have a cover flap, so that little heat can escape and you are less likely to injure yourself.

What is the so-called differential cut?

Most modern sleeping bags consist of several shells, the inner and outer ones. The shells should be different sizes to prevent compression of the filling.

What does coupling mean with sleeping bags?

So that two people can use the sleeping bags as a blanket while on vacation, it is important to ensure that two sleeping bags of the same model are purchased. This ensures that the zippers match exactly. There is usually a right and a left model, which basically only refers to the zipper side. If there is no need for an insulating bottom or headrest, two right or left models can also be coupled.

What filling materials are there?

There are fillings made of down or synthetic fibers. There are no significant advantages or disadvantages, so you can decide relatively freely. Experience from long-term outdoor users shows that the much-discussed saturation of down with moisture actually occurs only rarely. The only thing to consider is that if you opt for a down sleeping bag, you should not skimp on the quality of the down filling.

What does loft mean?

With down fillings, loft or loft denotes the ratio of material between pure down and coarser, feather-like down. These serve as support feathers. The specification 80/20 would denote that the sleeping bag contains 80% pure down and 20% fill-down.

What does fill power mean?

For down, it is important to pay attention to the so-called fill power specification, whereby the values given by the manufacturer do not necessarily have to correspond to reality. The values are given in "cuin", which stands for cubic inches. This explains why the values are often also given in "cuin".

What does the so-called swelling capacity mean?

The swelling capacity, also known as loft, names the ratio of the material between pure down and coarser, feathered down. These serve as support feathers. The specification 80/20 would denote that the sleeping bag contains 80% pure down and 20% fill down.

What is the best way to store?

As long as the sleeping bag has not become moist or wet, after use and airing for a while, it can simply be packed - not compressed - into one of the textile covers, as they are offered, for example, for storage under the bed. Alternatively, some outdoor enthusiasts wrap their sleeping bags in old duvet covers. The important thing is not to squash or press it, as this would compress the filling too much, preventing it from fully expanding and therefore not insulating as well. However, there are also special storage bags, so everyone has to decide for themselves what they prefer.
