Well-Prepared in the Dark with Flashlights
ASMC shows what to consider when choosing the right flashlight.
What Should Be Considered When Using Flashlights?
Before using the flashlight, check if the correct and sufficient batteries are inserted and if any battery has leaked or shows signs of leakage (battery acid corrosion on one of the terminals). The flashlight is usually activated by a button, less often by a twist mechanism. As flashlights typically do not have attachment straps, they must either be clipped to a belt or stored in a backpack.
Flashlights are generally very robust and difficult to damage, except perhaps the protective glass. Therefore, special care is usually not necessary when handling the flashlight. However, due to their sometimes heavier weight, caution should be exercised to prevent injuries when passing the flashlight to others or swinging it around during use.
Which Flashlight is the Right One?
First, the intended use of the flashlight must be defined. Flashlights come in various sizes, colors, and shapes. The most well-known type of more professional flashlight is the Mag-Lite. It impresses with its long battery life and robust construction. It is the classic among flashlights and should be carried especially when extremely bright and broad illumination is needed.
In addition to the Mag-Lite, mini lamps or photon pumps are also worth considering. Mini lamps are particularly convincing due to their portability: thanks to their small size, they can be easily carried in a pocket. The variety of colors allows for customization to personal taste. The angle lamp can illuminate dark corners and is excellent for tactical maneuvers.
Whether to choose a larger or smaller lamp depends on the intended use and personal preferences. Smaller lamps are suitable for activities requiring long walks. Larger lamps are ideal for permanent placement at a specific location or when extreme illumination is needed.
Expert Tip:
Signal with the Reflector and Sun, No Power Needed
If you remove the reflector mirror from the flashlight, you can use it to send signals in sunlight to communicate over long distances or to attract attention in emergency situations.
Questions: Flashlights
Lumen Specifications?
The higher the lumen count, the brighter the light. However, lumens are not the only criterion for a bright flashlight; the beam shape (thrower or flooder) is also crucial. It is advisable to seek advice from a professional when purchasing one.
The flashlight won't turn off, what can be done?
If the button or switch is defective and the flashlight won't turn off, it is recommended to first remove the batteries to prevent overheating (although there is usually no danger with most models). If you cannot fix the defect yourself, the best solution is to consult a professional.
When were flashlights invented?
The light bulb was invented around 1880 by Thomas Alva Edison. The electric flashlight patent dates back to 1903 in the USA, invented by Conrad Hubert, a Russian immigrant. The "modern classic" was introduced by Maglite in 1979.
What are angle flashlights?
Angle flashlights have a bend or angle, as the name suggests. The 90° angle design allows for new applications. For example, it can be used as a tripod flashlight: simply stand it on its "foot" to illuminate the work area. The angle prevents rolling, making alignment very easy.
