Grills can be purchased in many different variants. We show what matters in the selection and use.
Before using a grill for the first time, read the instructions for use. When assembling the grill, make sure it is securely and safely connected to the ground. A level surface is advantageous, but not necessarily required for some models like the swing grill.
All flammable materials, especially fire starters, should be stored at a safe distance. While preparing the grill food, the grill should be constantly monitored. Gusts of wind and carelessness can quickly lead to dangerous situations where fires can occur.
When using a grill, any children present should definitely be supervised. The flame of the grill should not come into direct contact with the grill food. The grill food tastes best when cooked slowly and with some distance.
Before choosing the right grill, consider where it will be used. Smaller disposable grills are ideal for use on balconies or camping. If you need a larger grill while camping, focus on a collapsible grill. This has a compact design and can be transported quickly and easily.
In addition to conventional grill grates, coated grates can also be purchased, which are especially suitable for preparing vegetables. While most models are suitable for "normal" meat preparation, others are specifically designed for smoking meat and fish.
The swing grill is becoming increasingly popular. It can accommodate either a grill grate or a swing kettle, in which soups can also be prepared. The variety of the range allows for selection according to individual preferences and needs.
Dig a hole in the ground about the size of a head and line it with a plastic bag or semi-waterproof material. The liner must fit as tightly as possible against the pit walls. On the flat bottom of the pit, place a layer of stones or a grate made of fresh, debarked branches, weighted down with stones. Fill the pit with water and heat several stones on a fire or similar. Then gradually place the heated stones one by one into the "cooking pit".
Whether fish, meat, or vegetables are placed on the grill - the shape of the grill is the first criterion to be decided. The classic charcoal grill comes in various versions and weight and price ranges. There are even inexpensive disposable grills that are essentially only suitable for single grilling but already have everything needed for it and have an extremely small packing volume. Then there are kettle grills, named after their construction. The advantage here is that they can usually be closed with a lid and thus provide higher heat.
However, many models are not suitable or only limited for trips. So, the focus will mostly be on models from the camping grill category. The only downside is that you naturally have to carry charcoal with you unless you make it yourself if you really need it. Just on the edge, pillar, gas, and electric grills should also be mentioned, which, in addition to many advantages, unfortunately also have a massive disadvantage: you have to carry a heavy gas source (usually a gas bottle), which is of course not discussable for camping and outdoor use in principle. However, these usually already have a thermometer integrated in the flap, which is also practical. Or in the case of electric grills, you need to have a power source ready, which is also quite difficult in the outdoor area. Unfortunately, the column grill is mainly due to a larger construction form opposed to the pleasure of grilling on the go.
There are different methods for this, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The motto is to try them all once and then apply the most suitable method for yourself again in the future. As a trick, we can recommend that the rough contaminations / encrustations with black-burned food residues should be treated in a two-stage process. For this, it is worthwhile to always have a few old rolls or pretzels at hand. With this hard, yet non-abrasive and fully biodegradable material, the roughest "dirt" can be removed most gently. Then the rest of the grill can be washed off with a sponge specifically laid aside for this purpose. Best with dish soap, as it is "food-safe" and also leaves no odor or taste residues for the next grilling.
It comes from English and means Barbecue, referring to a cooking method where meat is cooked in large pieces over the hot air of a fire.
