Even while camping or hiking in the great outdoors, there's no need to do without a complete set of cutlery. Discover which eating utensils are particularly suitable with the compact ASMC overview.
During longer stays far from restaurants and supermarkets, provisions in the luggage or what can be legally picked, hunted, and fished are used as food. The eating utensils should be light, compact, multifunctional, and easy to store. Tip: The durability of outdoor cutlery is significantly increased if it is cleaned and dried immediately after each use. This prevents corrosion and also ensures hygiene. In addition, pocket knives and folding cutlery can only be smoothly opened and closed permanently if they are cleaned immediately.
The outdoor cutlery set with a pocket knife offers not only a blade but also a multifunctional tool. Including fork and spoon, it fits into a durable nylon pouch with a belt loop. The pocket knife cutlery 6in1, which handles even wine bottles without problems, has forks and spoons that fold out in the folder.
For decades, the stackable so-called BW cutlery, which has been/ is used by the Bundeswehr, has proven itself. It also includes a bottle and can opener. Only a hole at the end of the handle for a metal ring or carabiner hook distinguishes eating utensils and comparable models from classic home cutlery.
It is important to use the right wood for this purpose. Not every tree is non-toxic. Here's a brief overview of non-toxic tree species suitable for processing (information provided without guarantee):
- Lime (very easy to work with)
- Oak (rather hard, hence difficult to work with, but more durable)
- Poplar
- Fruit trees
- Maple
- Walnut
- Birch
- Weeping willow
Now you need a suitable carving tool, such as a pocket knife. However, the typical pocket knife may not be ideal for elegantly shaping the curve of a spoon. There are specific carving tools for this purpose, but whether you really want to carry them is another matter. In any case, start by roughly shaping the desired cutlery form and then refine the structures, such as those of a spoon, gradually.
Applying linseed oil, which is occasionally recommended, should be carefully considered for items used for eating.
Some multi-tool cutlery utensils even have up to 7 functions. However, 3 are common, i.e., fork, spoon, and knife, as these are the most frequently needed. A can opener should definitely not be missing, unless it is already integrated in the multi-tool carried by most outdoor enthusiasts.
With stackable or foldable cutlery, make sure there is no rattling due to loose locking mechanisms, as this can quickly cause annoying noises during tours.
Outdoor cutlery is mostly made of aluminum or other metals, less commonly of wood. Plastic is also quite common as it is very lightweight. Both variants are almost always dishwasher safe, but it is advisable to consult the care instructions of the respective manufacturer.
