A Cool Headscarf for Hot Missions

Fashion enthusiasts call it chic accessories. Outdoor lovers refer to it as practical gear because headscarves are not only decorative but can also be an essential item in your equipment.

Facing the Sun Head-On

Headscarves are not about warmth. On the contrary, they protect the brain from heat without adding much weight. Additionally, in some variations, they prove to be effective against wind, dust, and sand. It's no wonder that male desert dwellers in Middle Eastern areas consistently opt for the "kufiya," also known as "Palestinian scarf," "bandana," or "shemagh." Arab and Turkish people almost universally use headscarves as standard headgear.

The lightweight material doesn't burden, yet it handles various weather conditions in warm regions with loose soil. For Western Europeans, spontaneity plays a significant role: many models can be draped flexibly, used as a scarf when needed, or stored compactly in a jacket or safari pants pocket, which proves handy in Germany's changeable weather.

For different uses, models come in various shapes, colors, and camouflage patterns, such as black, red, flecktarn, or other prints. This includes fun variations like pirate headscarves or those with werewolf teeth, making it relatively easy to "transform" even during Carnival.

Traditional All-Rounders and Modern Designs

The classic option is a shemagh made of lightweight cotton. The generously sized cloth remains highly functional, offering a wide range of uses, including by bikers. Distinguish between elongated models that are easily arranged as turbans and can be cut to fit and square versions with diamond patterns. A camouflage scarf also provides warmth and can be combined with a cap if needed. Modern tube scarves or headscarves follow this design idea. This compact version is exceptionally versatile as headgear, scarf, wrist warmer, or headband. Its multifunctionality makes these accessories trendy among women and children as well. For sun protection, consider a headwrap, transporting the pirate look into today's fashion world. The scarf looks stylish, tames hair in windy beach conditions, and shields the head from UV rays.

While the sun is considered our friend and energy source for the body, caution is needed. In extremely hot situations, which you may be exposed to for an extended period, it's important to prevent sunstroke.

If it does occur, make sure companions know how to react. As a first aid measure, move the affected person quickly from the sun into the shade.

Help them sit upright and, if possible, cool essential body parts with damp cloths if available. Of course, fluid intake is also crucial.

To prevent this, you can achieve a longer-lasting cooling effect and keep the sun at bay by using a damp cloth on the head.

How do you tie a headscarf?

Spread the headscarf flat.
One corner must be folded so that its tip reaches the center of the square spread cloth.
Place your hands on either side of the fold crease and place the cloth on the forehead at the desired height.

Move your hands toward the cloth corners and gather them at the back of the head.
Hold the knot with one hand to prevent it from coming loose while using the other hand to guide the free front end of the headscarf backward.
Finally, tie another knot over the cloth corner brought to the back. This effectively holds the headscarf between the two knots.
